Recently i've been working around with a R&D on webmail related concept. Found something which is really worthy.
Squirrelmail [ships with Linux by default], could be configured on a windows server with a smtp/imap server
Requires additional components such as PHP, PERL and IIS/Apache
Mailbox mgmt, logging events, backup and restore are pretty easy.
Best suited for SME's coz its all free of cost
If anyone requires how to deploy...Pl revert
